AIADMK's Palaniswami slams TVK crop loan waiver as betrayal

AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Tamil Nadu Vilipanmai Katchi (TVK) government's decision to waive crop loans up to Rs 50,000, labeling it a 'betrayal' of farmers. He accused the ruling party of engaging in political maneuvers to distract the public from what he termed 'the most disgusting politics of horse-trading.'

Sharp Criticism of Loan Waiver

Speaking to reporters in Chennai, Palaniswami said the waiver was a hollow promise that would not benefit the majority of farmers. 'This is nothing but a betrayal of the farming community. The government is idling away time by announcing such measures to divert the people of Tamil Nadu from watching the most disgusting politics of horse-trading,' he asserted.

The former chief minister questioned the timing and implementation of the waiver, alleging that it was a last-minute gimmick to regain lost credibility. 'The TVK government has failed to address the real issues plaguing farmers, including inadequate irrigation facilities and fair pricing for produce. Instead, they are resorting to populist measures that will only burden the state exchequer,' he added.

Political Implications

Political analysts view Palaniswami's remarks as part of a larger strategy to corner the TVK government ahead of the upcoming local body elections. The AIADMK has been trying to position itself as the true champion of farmers' rights in Tamil Nadu.

The TVK government, however, defended its decision, stating that the waiver would provide immediate relief to small and marginal farmers. A senior TVK minister said, 'Our government is committed to the welfare of farmers. This waiver is a step towards fulfilling our election promise.'

Background

The crop loan waiver up to Rs 50,000 was announced by the TVK government last week, covering loans taken from cooperative banks and primary agricultural credit societies. The scheme is expected to benefit over 20 lakh farmers in the state.

Palaniswami's strong reaction underscores the deepening political rivalry between the AIADMK and TVK in Tamil Nadu. With both parties vying for the support of the agrarian community, the issue is likely to dominate the political discourse in the coming months.
