BJP MLAs in Tumakuru Demand District Renaming, Target Parameshwara
BJP MLAs in Tumakuru Target Parameshwara Over District Renaming

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs from Tumakuru district in Karnataka have launched a fresh political offensive against Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, demanding a halt to what they claim is a politically motivated district renaming plan. The legislators, led by Suresh Gowda, have accused Parameshwara of orchestrating the renaming of Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South, allegedly with real estate interests in mind.

Allegations of Real Estate Motives

Suresh Gowda, a prominent BJP leader from the region, drew a direct parallel between the proposed renaming of Ramanagara and the long-standing demand for renaming Tumakuru district. He alleged that Parameshwara's push for renaming Ramanagara was driven by personal and commercial benefits rather than administrative efficiency. 'The deputy chief minister is trying to rename Ramanagara as Bengaluru South to inflate land prices and benefit his associates in the real estate sector,' Gowda claimed during a press conference in Tumakuru.

BJP's Counter-Demand

The BJP MLAs have now turned the tables on Parameshwara, demanding that if the government proceeds with renaming Ramanagara, it must also consider renaming Tumakuru district to 'Tumakuru North' or a similar nomenclature. They argue that the move would ensure parity and prevent any one region from gaining undue advantage. 'We are not opposed to renaming per se, but it must be done transparently and without any hidden agenda,' Gowda added.

Political Implications

The issue has taken a sharp political turn, with the BJP using it to corner the Congress-led state government ahead of upcoming local elections. Parameshwara, who hails from the neighboring district, has dismissed the allegations as baseless, stating that the renaming proposal is based on historical and cultural considerations. However, the BJP's aggressive stance suggests that the district renaming plan could become a major electoral flashpoint in the region.

The controversy also highlights the sensitive nature of district boundaries and nomenclature in Karnataka, where linguistic and regional identities often influence political dynamics. As the debate intensifies, all eyes are on the state government's next move regarding the renaming proposal.
