Amritsar Police File Case Against Four Doctors in Bodybuilder's Death
In a significant development, the Amritsar police have officially booked four doctors from a private hospital in connection with the tragic death of 41-year-old professional bodybuilder and actor Varinder Singh Ghuman. The incident occurred during a minor surgical procedure in October of the previous year, sparking widespread concern and leading to a thorough investigation.
Details of the Booked Doctors
The doctors implicated in this case have been identified as Dr Tapish Shukla, Dr Alka Tiwari, Dr Rajinder Kaur, and Dr Arun Kumar Chopra. Police officials confirmed that the registration of the case followed the critical findings of a seven-member medical board, which was constituted under the chairmanship of a Civil Surgeon to delve into the circumstances surrounding Ghuman's untimely demise.
Medical Board's Investigation and Findings
The medical board, comprising specialists from orthopaedics, medicine, cardiology, anaesthesia, and forensic science, was tasked with examining the case and submitting its report within a two-week timeframe. During their inquiry, the panel meticulously reviewed medical records obtained from the hospital and recorded statements from both the complainant and the treating doctors.
The board observed several lapses in the medical care provided, including a lack of transparency, a failure to adequately explain possible complications to the patient or his family, and a deviation from standard medical protocols. These findings highlighted serious concerns about the adherence to professional standards during the surgical procedure.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigations
The panel submitted its detailed report on February 26 to Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, recommending further action. Acting on these findings, the police have now registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to negligence leading to death. Authorities have emphasized that further investigations are currently underway to gather additional evidence and determine the full extent of liability in this case.
This case underscores the importance of accountability in healthcare and has drawn attention to the need for strict adherence to medical protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
