Amritsar Police File FIR Against Four Doctors Over Bodybuilder's Death

In a significant development, the Amritsar police have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against four senior doctors from a prominent private hospital. The case centers on allegations of medical negligence leading to the tragic death of 41-year-old bodybuilder Varinder Singh Ghuman, who passed away on October 9, 2025.

Investigation Teams Formed to Probe the Incident

To thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding Ghuman's death, authorities have constituted a special investigation team (SIT) alongside a seven-member medical board. These teams are tasked with examining the medical procedures and determining the exact cause of the fatality.

Police sources have indicated that the death occurred due to alleged negligence during a surgical procedure at Fortis Escorts Hospital in Amritsar. Consequently, the police have filed a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the four doctors involved.

Details of the Accused Doctors and Hospital's Response

The doctors named in the FIR include an orthopedic surgeon, two anesthetists (one of whom is a consultant), and a cardiologist. On October 10, 2025, the hospital released an initial statement explaining that the patient experienced sudden cardiac arrhythmia. The medical team reportedly initiated advanced resuscitation measures immediately, but despite their efforts, Ghuman could not be revived.

Following the registration of the FIR, the hospital issued another statement on Saturday, acknowledging the legal action. "We are given to understand that an FIR has been registered in the case. We have been cooperating with the authorities and will continue to do so while pursuing appropriate remedies in accordance with the applicable legal and regulatory framework," the statement read.

Medical Fraternity Expresses Resentment Over FIR

The decision to file an FIR against the doctors has sparked considerable resentment within the medical community. Dr. Avtar Singh, a senior orthopedic surgeon, convened a meeting in Amritsar to address the issue. Speaking to mediapersons afterward, Dr. Singh voiced concerns that registering an FIR against doctors following a patient's death, especially after a medical board report, could severely demoralize the fraternity.

Dr. Singh emphasized that medical complications can arise even when due care is provided. He stressed the importance of respecting doctors' dignity, professional integrity, and working conditions, while also ensuring a fair and balanced approach to accountability. The medical community is calling for a nuanced evaluation that considers the inherent risks in medical procedures without hastily attributing blame.

The case continues to unfold as the SIT and medical board proceed with their investigations, aiming to deliver a comprehensive report on the incident.
