A 22-year-old MBBS student died after falling from her hostel building in Kerala's Kollam district on Monday, police said. The incident occurred at the Government Medical College, Kollam, where the student, identified as Ann Paulose, was a second-year MBBS student. Police suspect suicide and have launched an investigation.
Details of the Incident
According to police, Paulose fell from the fourth floor of the girls' hostel around 6:30 am. She was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Preliminary investigations suggest she jumped from the building, but police are examining all angles.
Police said investigators will soon examine Paulose's hostel room and record statements from her relatives and friends to determine the circumstances leading to her death. No suicide note has been found so far.
Student's Background
Ann Paulose was a native of Pathanamthitta district and had been studying at the Government Medical College, Kollam, for the past two years. Her classmates described her as a bright and cheerful student. The college administration has expressed shock and grief over the incident.
Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and are awaiting the post-mortem report. The college has also initiated a counselling session for students to help them cope with the tragedy.
Mental Health Concerns
The incident has once again highlighted the mental health challenges faced by medical students. According to a 2022 study published in the Indian Journal of Psychiatry, nearly 28% of medical students in India experience depression. Experts emphasize the need for robust mental health support systems in medical colleges.
