Lucknow Doctors Save Young Woman's Leg from Bone Cancer with Complex Surgery

Doctors at the Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute in Lucknow achieved a remarkable medical success. They performed a complex limb salvage surgery on a young patient suffering from bone cancer. This procedure saved her leg and allowed her to walk again within just five days of the operation.

Patient's Journey from Diagnosis to Treatment

The patient is a 22-year-old woman from Rae Bareli. She received a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, which is an aggressive form of bone cancer. Doctors at AIIMS Rae Bareli conducted a biopsy that confirmed the presence of a tumour. Following this confirmation, they referred her to KSSSCI for advanced treatment options.

Expert Surgical Team Leads the Procedure

The challenging surgery took place under the leadership of Dr Ankur Verma, who heads the surgical oncology department. Faculty members Dr Durgesh Kumar and Dr Ashok Kumar Singh assisted him during the operation. Together, this skilled team tackled the complex case with precision and care.

Choosing Limb Salvage Over Amputation

Dr Ankur Verma explained that in many osteosarcoma cases, especially those involving the tibia leg bone, amputation often remains the only viable option. However, the KSSSCI team decided to pursue a limb salvage approach instead. They completely removed the cancer-affected tibia bone and reconstructed it using a cost-effective prosthesis. This innovative method preserved the limb and restored its function effectively.

Significant Cost Savings for the Patient

The total cost of this procedure amounted to approximately Rs 1.75 lakh. In contrast, a similar surgery in private hospitals typically costs between Rs 4.5 lakh and Rs 5 lakh. This substantial reduction in expense significantly eased the financial burden on the patient and her family, making advanced treatment more accessible.

Doctors Emphasize Quality of Life and Recovery

Dr Ankur Verma stated that limb salvage surgery for tibial osteosarcoma presents extreme challenges. He emphasized that their aim extended beyond saving the patient's life. The team focused on preserving her limb and enhancing her overall quality of life through this procedure.

Dr Durgesh Kumar noted the patient's recovery progressed remarkably fast. Dr Ashok Kumar Singh added that with the current expertise and facilities at the institute, they plan to perform such complex limb-preserving surgeries regularly in the future.
