A shocking case of medical negligence has emerged from a government hospital in Indore, where a newborn baby suffered a severe injury due to alleged carelessness by a staff nurse. The incident has prompted swift administrative action and a high-level investigation.
Infant's Thumb Severed During Routine Procedure
The distressing event took place on January 7 at the MY Hospital, which is associated with MG Medical College. The victim was a one-and-a-half-month-old boy who was being treated for pneumonia in the chest ward. The baby had successfully been weaned off ventilator support and was slated for discharge within a few days.
During the routine removal of an IV cannula, nursing officer Aarti Kshotriya allegedly used a pair of scissors and accidentally cut off the infant's thumb. The reckless act immediately turned a recovery story into a medical emergency.
Immediate Response and Disciplinary Action
The injured baby was rushed to the Super Specialty Hospital within the same complex, where surgeons performed an urgent procedure to reattach the severed thumb. According to Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, the dean of MG Medical College, the child is now recovering well from the surgery.
Following the discovery of the negligence, the hospital administration took strict disciplinary measures. Nursing officer Aarti Kshotriya was suspended from duty. Furthermore, as a punitive measure, the salary for one month was withheld for the nursing in-charge and two assistant nursing in-charge officers.
Dr. Ghanghoria confirmed that the MY Hospital superintendent was directed to investigate the matter thoroughly and submit a detailed report.
High-Level Probe and Political Oversight
An inquiry committee was swiftly constituted to look into the grave incident. The panel includes hospital superintendent Dr. Ashok Yadav, paediatrician Dr. Nirbhay Mehta, deputy superintendent Dr. Rohit Baderia, and nursing superintendent Dayavati Dayal. This committee recorded the statement of the accused nurse on Thursday.
The incident drew the attention of the state's political leadership. Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, who also oversees the health portfolio, took serious note of the negligence. He has directed authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the role of all concerned medical and support staff. Shukla has also instructed officials to ensure that strict disciplinary action is taken against any officers or employees found guilty in the probe.
This case has raised serious questions about patient safety protocols and staff training in government healthcare facilities, especially concerning the care of vulnerable infants.
