The Command Hospital in Pune successfully conducted a multi-organ donation procedure on May 5, saving three lives. The donor was a 38-year-old infantry soldier who was declared brain dead after a road accident in Nashik on May 3.
Organ Retrieval and Transplantation
Doctors retrieved the organs under established medical protocols and coordinated their transport through a special green corridor. The liver and one kidney were airlifted to the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in Delhi, while the second kidney was transplanted at the Pune hospital itself.
According to a senior doctor from the Command Hospital, two serving soldiers admitted to the Army Hospital (R&R) in Delhi received the organs, while a dependent of a serving subedar received the kidney at the Pune facility. All three patients are recovering well.
Coordinated Effort
The operation involved close coordination between the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, and civil authorities to ensure timely delivery of the organs. After obtaining the family's consent, the hospital immediately coordinated with multiple agencies.
A team of doctors from the Army Hospital (R&R) flew to Pune in an AN-32 transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force. They reached the Command Hospital via the green corridor and transported the organs back to Delhi within the stipulated time. The entire exercise was carried out in the early hours of Wednesday.
Southern Command authorities praised the medical teams at the Command Hospital for carrying out the organ retrieval with exceptional precision, compassion, and clinical excellence under established protocols.
Hospital's Track Record
The Command Hospital, Southern Command, is one of the largest military hospitals in India and has been successfully performing organ transplants for several years. This year alone, the hospital has conducted eight such procedures.
