SAT Hospital Achieves Medical Milestone with Transplant from India's Youngest Donor
In a groundbreaking medical achievement, SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram has successfully completed a complex kidney transplant procedure using organs from the youngest donor in India's history. The historic surgery has enabled a 10-year-old recipient to return home after a full recovery, marking a significant advancement in paediatric transplantation capabilities.
The Youngest Donor and Successful Recipient
The donor, 10-month-old Alin Sherin Abraham from Mallappally in Pathanamthitta district, tragically passed away following a road accident. In a remarkable act of medical coordination and compassion, both of Alin's kidneys were transplanted into 10-year-old Shreya, who had been undergoing haemodialysis at the hospital's paediatric nephrology department due to kidney failure.
Shreya was discharged from the hospital on Thursday following her successful recovery. The transplant procedure itself lasted over 12 hours and presented unique challenges due to the size difference between the infant donor and the child recipient.
Multidisciplinary Medical Excellence
The complex surgery was performed by a highly skilled multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Haris Chirackal, head of the urology department, and Dr. Susan Uthup, head of paediatric nephrology. The team included numerous specialists from paediatric surgery, anaesthesia, and various supporting departments who collaborated seamlessly throughout the intricate procedure.
Hospital authorities emphasized that transplanting both kidneys from an infant donor into a child presented particular technical difficulties that required exceptional surgical precision and coordination. The successful outcome was ensured through intensive monitoring during the critical first 24 hours post-surgery and meticulously coordinated post-operative care.
Building on Recent Transplant Success
This landmark procedure follows another significant achievement earlier in January 2026, when SAT Hospital performed its first kidney transplant on a child weighing just 16 kilograms. Within weeks of that initial success, the organs from the infant donor became available and were successfully transplanted into Shreya.
Both of these pioneering transplant procedures were conducted completely free of cost under various state government healthcare assistance schemes, ensuring that financial constraints did not prevent these life-saving interventions.
Establishing a Paediatric Transplantation Center of Excellence
With these consecutive achievements, SAT Hospital has firmly established itself as a leading center for paediatric kidney transplantation in India. The hospital's capabilities now place it on par with other major institutions in the field, offering hope to countless children suffering from kidney failure across the region.
The successful transplant represents not just a medical breakthrough but also demonstrates the hospital's growing expertise in handling complex paediatric cases that were previously considered exceptionally challenging. This development significantly expands treatment options for young patients with renal failure who previously had limited access to such advanced surgical interventions.
