Spike in Stray Dog Attacks Prompts Swift Civic Action in Udgir

The Udgir taluka in Maharashtra's Latur district has reported a worrying surge in incidents involving stray dogs, with around 22 cases of bites recorded since December 23. City engineer Komal Kendre confirmed the details on Thursday, noting that a couple of children were among the victims.

Official Response and Precautionary Measures

Kendre clarified that the recent dog bite incidents did not involve any rabid dogs. However, as a strict precaution, all victims have been administered both the anti-rabies vaccine and rabies antiserum. The local municipal council has estimated the stray dog population in vulnerable areas to be around 600.

In response to the sudden spurt, the civic body has increased the frequency of dog van trips to these areas. "We have a dedicated shelter home for dogs where captured animals are being kept. The Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme involving stray dogs has been intensified," Kendre stated.

Public Concern and Calls for Effective Implementation

The rise in attacks has alarmed local residents. Resident Sambhappa Kawade urged the municipal council to act swiftly to curb the menace. He emphasized that the effective execution of the ABC programme is crucial to controlling the stray dog population. "This measure should not remain on paper. The menace of stray dogs could prove fatal if official neglect continues," Kawade warned.

Alongside the capture and sterilization drives, the authorities have also initiated public awareness campaigns in schools, colleges, and other institutions. These drives aim to educate residents, especially children, on safety measures to avoid conflicts with stray dogs.

The situation in Udgir highlights the ongoing challenge of managing stray animal populations in urban and semi-urban areas, balancing animal welfare with public safety through proactive and sustained civic measures.
