Major Anti-Rabies Initiative at Dibrugarh Airport
In a significant move to enhance public health safety, the veterinary department of Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) joined forces with the non-governmental organization Animal Welfare People to vaccinate 22 stray dogs at the Dibrugarh Airport complex. This coordinated effort took place on Sunday and covered key areas within the aviation facility.
Comprehensive Vaccination Coverage
The day-long anti-rabies vaccination drive extended across multiple sections of the airport complex, including the Air Traffic Control (ATC) block and residential quarter areas. Authorities designed this initiative specifically to address the health concerns arising from the presence of stray animals within the important aviation facility.
A volunteer from Animal Welfare People explained the critical nature of such programs, stating that airport complexes frequently host stray animals that interact with various people. "These strays regularly come into contact with airport staff, passengers, and residents of the quarters," the volunteer noted. "Conducting regular vaccination drives is crucial not only for human safety but also for effective disease management among the animal population."
Authorities Emphasize Public Safety
Deputy Mayor Ujjal Phukon highlighted the importance of this initiative, pointing out that airports with their extensive open spaces often become natural habitats for stray dogs. "By vaccinating these animals, we substantially decrease the risk of rabies transmission," Phukon stated. "This approach ensures a safer environment for everyone - passengers, airport staff, and the animals themselves."
The collaboration received appreciation from all participating organizations, with the Animal Welfare People volunteer expressing gratitude for the cooperation extended by both airport authorities and the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation.
Sustained Efforts for Long-term Protection
Authorities have confirmed that similar vaccination drives will be conducted periodically in the future. This ongoing approach aims to maintain herd immunity among the stray dog population while ensuring continuous protection against rabies in and around the Dibrugarh airport area.
The successful completion of this drive marks an important step in creating a safer environment at the crucial transportation hub, balancing both human safety concerns and animal welfare considerations.
