Ahmedabad Ophthalmologists Advocate for Mandatory Glaucoma Screening During World Glaucoma Week
In a significant public health initiative, medical experts and ophthalmologists convened at the Blind People's Association (BPA) in Ahmedabad on Saturday to address the growing threat of glaucoma. The discussion, held in conjunction with World Glaucoma Week from March 8 to 14, focused on prevention strategies and the urgent need for enhanced screening protocols.
Government Support and Expert Warnings
The event was inaugurated by Darshana Vaghela, Minister of State for Urban Development and Housing, who commended the initiative for its vital focus on community health. Jatin Tiwari, Director of Programme Operations at the NGO Sightsavers, highlighted the critical importance of early detection. "Screening for individuals above 40 is paramount," Tiwari stated, "as timely intervention is the only way to prevent permanent, irreversible blindness from this silent thief of sight."
Call for Routine Intraocular Pressure Checks
Dr. Uday Gajiwala, a senior ophthalmologist, delivered a compelling talk emphasizing a practical solution. He advocated for the mandatory measurement of intraocular pressure during all routine medical check-ups. "Many glaucoma cases remain hidden until significant vision loss occurs," Dr. Gajiwala explained. "Integrating this simple test into standard practice can identify at-risk patients long before symptoms manifest, allowing for effective management."
The Alarming Link to Non-Communicable Diseases
Experts at the gathering presented a concerning correlation. They noted that the rapid global increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly diabetes and hypertension, is driving a parallel surge in glaucoma cases. This condition has now solidified its position as a leading cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide.
The multidisciplinary approach championed at the Ahmedabad event aims to fundamentally reshape healthcare protocols. The core objective is to seamlessly integrate comprehensive eye care into standard medical frameworks. This proactive strategy is designed not only to combat glaucoma but also to safeguard the quality of life and independence of the ageing population, ensuring they can enjoy their later years with clear vision and dignity.
