Ahmedabad Girls' Hostel Food Poisoning Outbreak: 38 Students Hospitalized
A severe suspected food poisoning incident has struck a girls' hostel in Memnagar, Ahmedabad, leading to the hospitalization of 38 students within a 24-hour period. The outbreak began on Sunday night, with 20 additional students admitted to Sterling Hospital, escalating the crisis.
Hospital Status and Student Resilience
By Monday evening, 33 students remained under medical care at Sterling Hospital, all reported to be in stable condition. Hospital authorities confirmed that five girls were discharged earlier in the day. Remarkably, three of the hospitalized students demonstrated extraordinary determination by appearing for their annual college examinations while undergoing treatment.
Dr. Sudhir Morad, the medical superintendent of Sterling Hospital, stated, "They were taken to the exam centre with support staff and brought back to the hospital afterward. All admitted girls are stable." This highlights both the severity of the situation and the resilience of the affected students.
Outbreak Details and Suspected Causes
The incident unfolded on Sunday when 57 girls from the Patel community-run hostel were urgently transported to the hospital. They had been suffering from severe symptoms including diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting for over a day. Initially, 18 girls with more critical symptoms, such as low blood pressure, were admitted, while others were treated and discharged.
Sources indicate that many of the affected students had consumed various food items in the days preceding the outbreak. Suspected contaminated foods include pani puri, dabeli, khichdi, idada, and sev khamni, raising significant concerns about food safety and hygiene practices at the hostel.
Official Investigation and Response
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken swift action in response to the outbreak. Authorities have issued a formal notice to the hostel management and collected food samples from the kitchen for detailed analysis. The goal is to determine the exact cause of the food poisoning and prevent future occurrences.
Further investigation is currently underway, with AMC officials working to identify potential lapses in food handling or storage. This incident underscores the critical importance of stringent food safety protocols in communal living settings, especially in hostels catering to students.
