Andhra Pradesh Secures Additional 1.90 Lakh HPV Vaccine Doses to Combat Cervical Cancer
The Andhra Pradesh government has received a significant boost in its efforts to prevent cervical cancer among adolescent girls, with an additional 1.90 lakh doses of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine supplied by the Central government. This fresh consignment follows an initial 1.90 lakh doses provided last month, bringing the total number of HPV vaccine doses available in the state to 3.81 lakh.
Vaccination Drive Gains Momentum Post-Examinations
According to Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav, the latest supply is set to accelerate the vaccination programme, which targets girls aged 14-15 years. With Class 10 public examinations now concluded, officials anticipate faster coverage as the drive continues uninterrupted until May. Data from village and ward secretariats indicates that the state has identified 3.45 lakh eligible girls in this age group, of which 1.14 lakh (33.19%) have already been vaccinated as of Monday.
District-Wide Distribution and Performance Highlights
The medical and health department has initiated steps to distribute the vaccines across districts based on the eligible population. Kurnool district leads with the highest number of vaccinations at 6,785, followed closely by Nellore (6,726), YSR district (6,725), and Anantapur (6,655). On the lower end, Polavaram recorded the fewest vaccinations at 669, with Alluri Sitarama Raju (1,063), Sri Sathya Sai (2,769), and Anakapalli (2,959) also showing varied progress.
Infrastructure and Safety Measures in Place
The vaccination drive is being conducted across 1,645 primary health centres and urban health centres, all equipped with cold chain facilities to ensure the safe storage and handling of the vaccines. This infrastructure is crucial for maintaining the efficacy of the HPV vaccine, which is widely regarded as a safe and effective preventive measure against cervical cancer.
Andhra Pradesh Emerges as a Leader in Vaccination Implementation
Andhra Pradesh is among the leading states in implementing the HPV vaccination programme in strict adherence to central government guidelines. In a notable allocation, 500 doses from the first phase were directed to Yanam as per Central directives, highlighting the state's commitment to comprehensive coverage. This proactive approach underscores the government's dedication to public health and cancer prevention among vulnerable populations.
