Bihar Pioneers HPV Vaccination in India, Integrates with National Campaign
Bihar has emerged as a trailblazer in India's fight against cervical cancer, having launched the country's first Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program approximately one-and-a-half years ago. Health Minister Mangal Pandey announced that the state has successfully administered the first dose to more than 6.7 lakh adolescent girls, marking a significant milestone in preventive healthcare.
National Campaign Launch and State Achievements
Minister Pandey made these remarks while participating in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's nationwide HPV vaccination campaign launch via videoconference from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) campus in Patna. The national initiative, inaugurated from Ajmer in Rajasthan on Saturday, aims to vaccinate approximately 1.15 crore girls aged 14 years across all states and union territories annually.
"Bihar has already vaccinated over 6,79,000 adolescent girls with the first dose and more than 85,000 have received their second dose since we began our two-dose HPV vaccination program for girls aged 9-14 years," Pandey stated. The state government will now seamlessly integrate its existing program with the newly launched national campaign to maximize coverage and effectiveness.
Cervical Cancer Statistics and State Targets
The minister emphasized the critical importance of this initiative by highlighting that cervical cancer ranks as the second most common cancer in women after breast cancer. Bihar has already achieved its ambitious target of vaccinating 13 lakh adolescent girls aged 14-15 years this year alone, demonstrating the program's successful implementation and community acceptance.
"This life-saving facility will be made available at community health centers in all districts and block headquarters across the state," Pandey assured, outlining the government's commitment to accessibility. The state's campaign carries the powerful pledge of 'Swasth beti, surakshit Bihar - sashakt hoga hamaara sansaar' (healthy daughter, safe Bihar - our world will be empowered), reflecting its comprehensive vision for women's health and societal wellbeing.
Administrative Coordination and Future Directions
Minister Pandey called upon the state health committee, district health officers, and all healthcare workers to make coordinated, sustained efforts to achieve the vaccination goals. Health Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh emphasized the dynamic nature of vaccination programs and the need for continuous adaptation and improvement.
The event at IGIMS was attended by key officials including Amit Kumar Pandey, Executive Director of the State Health Society, and Dr. Manish Mandal, Medical Superintendent of IGIMS, along with numerous other officials, doctors, and healthcare staff. Their collective presence underscored the multi-level governmental commitment to eradicating cervical cancer through systematic vaccination.
Bihar's early adoption and successful implementation of the HPV vaccination program positions it as a model for other states, demonstrating how proactive public health initiatives can create substantial impact before national rollouts.
