Bihar Workshop Focuses on Reducing Maternal Deaths Through Enhanced Pregnancy Care

Health experts in Patna stressed on Tuesday that early detection of complications during pregnancy, combined with regular monitoring and access to institutional care, can significantly lower the risk of maternal deaths. This crucial observation emerged during a workshop on high-risk pregnancy management, organized by the Bihar government in collaboration with Unicef in Purnia.

Government and Unicef Collaborate to Improve Maternal Health Outcomes

The workshop aimed to address the pressing issue of maternal mortality by focusing on better management strategies for high-risk pregnancies. District Magistrate Anshul Kumar, who chaired the event, directed health officials to ensure that no high-risk pregnancy cases go unreported. He emphasized the need for zero pendency in data entry to maintain accurate and timely records, which are vital for effective intervention and care.

Significant Progress in High-Risk Pregnancy Identification

Data presented at the workshop revealed a notable improvement in the identification of high-risk pregnancies in the district. The identification rate increased from 2.9% in the fiscal year 2021-22 to 14.4% in 2025-26, with a further rise to 21.2% as of March 2026. This upward trend indicates enhanced awareness and screening efforts among healthcare providers.

Block-Level Performance and District Leadership

At the block level, Baisi recorded the highest identification rate at 27%, followed by Amour at 20.7% and Rupauli at 18.1%. These figures highlight varying levels of success across different administrative units. Notably, Purnia district has emerged as a leader in Bihar, ranking first in both the identification and management of high-risk pregnancy cases, showcasing the effectiveness of recent initiatives.

Key Recommendations for Sustainable Health Improvements

Experts at the workshop outlined several key measures to sustain and build on this progress:

  • Early Detection: Implement routine screenings to identify complications at the earliest stages.
  • Regular Monitoring: Ensure continuous follow-up and check-ups for pregnant women, especially those at high risk.
  • Institutional Care Access: Facilitate easy access to well-equipped healthcare facilities for delivery and emergency services.
  • Data Management: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records to track cases and outcomes effectively.

These steps are seen as critical in reducing maternal mortality rates and improving overall maternal health in the region.
