Coimbatore: A dedicated 10-bed isolation ward is being established at Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital (CMCH) as a precautionary measure against the global threat of the Ebola virus, Minister for Backwards Classes Welfare V. Sampathkumar said on Thursday. The minister stated that the ward will be made operational within the next three days.
Minister's Surprise Inspection
Sampathkumar was speaking to reporters after conducting a surprise inspection at CMCH. He reviewed the hospital's infrastructure, patient amenities, and administrative operations. The minister also inspected the current condition of the hospital's older buildings and revealed that a blueprint for their demolition and reconstruction is being prepared.
Staff Accommodation and Hygiene Concerns
The minister acknowledged the lack of adequate accommodation facilities for nurses and assured that the government would address this issue. He expressed dissatisfaction with the maintenance of hospital restrooms and issued orders to prioritize hygiene and sanitation. A comprehensive inquiry will be conducted regarding complaints of staff shortages involving the private agency responsible for cleaning operations.
Action Against Corruption
Addressing complaints that doctors recommend patients purchase medicines from pharmacies outside the hospital, Sampathkumar asserted that the hospital's internal drug inventory is properly maintained. He warned that strict disciplinary action would be taken against any staff member found involved in bribery or corrupt practices.
