DYFI Stages Protest in Mangaluru Demanding Healthcare Reforms
Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) from the Dakshina Kannada district unit organized a significant demonstration in Mangaluru on Monday. The protest centered on a series of critical demands aimed at overhauling the region's healthcare infrastructure. The demonstrators called for the establishment of a government medical college specifically for the district, the upgradation of the existing Wenlock District Hospital to a full-fledged regional hospital, and the complete abolition of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in healthcare services.
Core Demands and Public Health Concerns
In addition to these primary demands, the DYFI members insisted on the creation of new taluk and community hospitals, as well as primary health centers. These new facilities are to be established strictly according to the population density and needs of the district. The protesters emphasized that the current healthcare system is failing the residents, leading to widespread distress and financial hardship during medical emergencies.
BK Imthiyaz, the district president of DYFI, voiced strong criticisms during the protest. He highlighted the lack of regulation in the private healthcare sector, where hospitals often charge vastly different rates for identical medical procedures. "People in Dakshina Kannada are finding themselves in desperate situations, forced to beg for assistance whenever they fall ill due to exorbitant and unregulated medical costs," Imthiyaz stated. He urged local legislators to shift their focus from traditional activities, such as buffalo races, to addressing these urgent public health issues.
Criticism of Government Hospital Conditions
Imthiyaz further claimed that the condition of government hospitals in the district has deteriorated significantly. He pointed out that there are no government taluk hospitals in five taluks, including Mangaluru itself, which severely limits access to affordable healthcare for many residents. This shortage forces people to rely on expensive private facilities or travel long distances for treatment.
Santhosh Bajal, the DYFI district secretary, provided a historical perspective on the healthcare crisis. He remarked that if the British had not established key institutions like Wenlock Hospital and Lady Goschen Hospital in the past, the current healthcare situation in Dakshina Kannada would be unimaginably worse. This statement underscores the long-standing neglect and underinvestment in public health infrastructure in the region.
Submission of Demands to Health Department
As part of their protest, the DYFI members compiled their demands into a formal memorandum. This document was submitted directly to the health department, urging immediate action and policy changes. The memorandum outlines the need for comprehensive reforms to ensure equitable, regulated, and accessible healthcare for all residents of Dakshina Kannada.
The demonstration reflects growing public frustration over healthcare disparities and the prioritization of public funds. The DYFI's demands highlight a critical need for investment in public health infrastructure, regulation of private medical costs, and a shift in governmental focus towards sustainable healthcare solutions for the district's population.
