Lucknow: Five patients received a fresh chance at life on May 29 after receiving organs from a deceased donor at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS). The donor, Fanish Mani Tripathi, a retired staff member of SGPGIMS, was declared brain dead following a road accident. Amid their personal loss, his family consented to donate his organs, helping save or restore the lives of five patients on the same day.
Organ retrieval and transplantation
Doctors retrieved two kidneys, one liver, and two corneas from the donor. The kidneys were transplanted into a 32-year-old man from Bahraich, who had been on dialysis since 2022, and a 31-year-old woman from Amethi, who had been undergoing dialysis since 2021. Both patients had been waiting for a transplant for a long time. The liver was transplanted at SGPGI, while the two corneas were sent to King George's Medical University and transplanted later in the day, restoring vision for two recipients.
Coordination and future plans
The retrieval and transplant procedures were completed through overnight coordination between multiple medical teams. SGPGI director Prof Radha Krishan Dhiman said the institute was working to ensure that organs and tissues retrieved at SGPGI could be transplanted within the institute on the same day. He stated, "This is an important first step towards strengthening advanced healthcare services at SGPGI, and we remain committed to ensuring patients in Uttar Pradesh do not have to go outside the state for organ and tissue transplantation."
Hospital officials described the donation as a powerful gesture that turned one family's loss into hope for five patients across Uttar Pradesh.
