Free Endoscopy Screening Launched in Trichy for Early GI Cancer Detection
Free Endoscopy Screening for GI Cancer in Trichy

The Delta Cancer Foundation (DCF), in collaboration with Sri Ramakrishna Specialty Hospital in Trichy, has initiated a free endoscopy screening program aimed at early detection of gastrointestinal cancer in the Cauvery delta region. The launch took place on Friday, marking a significant step toward preventive cancer care in the area.

Targeting the Farming Community

This initiative specifically focuses on the farming community, which is considered at higher risk due to occupational and lifestyle factors. Under the program, five individuals per day will receive free endoscopic screenings throughout the year. The screenings are designed to identify early signs of cancer in the stomach, esophagus, and digestive tract.

Eligibility Criteria

The screening is available for individuals above 40 years of age. Additionally, people who experience persistent gastrointestinal symptoms, such as chronic acidity, indigestion, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, or abdominal discomfort, are encouraged to participate. Those with a family history of cancer are also eligible for the free screening.

Past Success and Future Plans

In 2026, DCF reported that free surgery was introduced alongside screening. From a total of 482 individuals screened for stomach cancer, three patients benefited from the surgical intervention. The foundation emphasizes that early warning signs of gastrointestinal cancers include persistent acidity or indigestion, difficulty swallowing, loss of appetite, and chronic abdominal discomfort. Early detection through endoscopy can significantly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates.

This initiative aims to reduce the burden of cancer in the delta region by providing accessible and free preventive care. DCF and Sri Ramakrishna Specialty Hospital are committed to expanding this service to reach more individuals at risk.
