The Goa government is moving forward with the establishment of a new veterinary dispensary in Bicholim, while a Rs 13 crore veterinary hospital in Mulgao is being executed by the Infotech Corporation of Goa Ltd. This initiative aims to enhance veterinary healthcare infrastructure in the state.
Advanced Diagnostic Facilities
The new veterinary hospital in Mulgao will feature a mini diagnostic lab equipped with X-ray and sonography facilities. This will make it the third government veterinary hospital in Goa to possess such advanced equipment solely for animals. Currently, only the government veterinary hospitals at Sonsodo and Tonca have these machines installed, although the recruitment of trained technicians is still pending.
Veterinary ultrasonography is used for abdominal imaging, pregnancy diagnosis, and echocardiography in pets, livestock, and exotic species to detect organ abnormalities and fluid accumulation. The inclusion of these facilities in Mulgao is expected to significantly improve diagnostic capabilities for animal healthcare in the region.
Addressing Growing Demand
According to an official from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, the new project comes as a result of growing demand for affordable veterinary services in Bicholim taluka. Pet owners have often relied on expensive private clinics due to limited diagnostic capabilities in government facilities. The new hospital aims to bridge this gap and provide cost-effective care.
The veterinary dispensary will also have dedicated spaces for vaccinations, treatment, and other services, in addition to artificial insemination services for cattle and buffaloes. This comprehensive approach is designed to cater to the needs of both pet owners and livestock farmers in the area.
Additional Infrastructure Plans
The government has also planned a Rs 2.5 crore facility at Chicalim to replace the rented veterinary dispensary in Vasco. This project was stalled for nearly a decade due to pending construction approvals, including clearances from the Navy, which were secured only recently. The official stated that the hospital will provide a permanent and better-equipped setup for veterinary services in the region.
These developments underscore the government's commitment to improving veterinary healthcare infrastructure across Goa, ensuring that animals receive timely and affordable medical attention.
