In a significant move to address long-standing environmental and public health concerns, Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria conducted an on-site inspection of the Dadumajra dumping ground on Monday. The visit aimed to personally review the ongoing waste management measures and assess the steps being implemented to tackle the issue.
Scientific Methods Tackle Legacy Waste
During the review, officials apprised the Governor that bio-mining and other scientific methods are currently being employed to clear the legacy waste that has accumulated over the years. A key highlight of the briefing was the operational status of three Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centres, which are now handling segregation and processing of municipal solid waste.
In a promising development, officials confirmed that no fresh garbage has been dumped at the Dadumajra site since February of this year. All newly generated waste is now being systematically routed to the operational MRF centres for scientific processing, marking a critical shift in the city's waste disposal strategy.
Governor's Directives for a Greener Future
Governor Gulab Chand Kataria stressed the urgent need to speed up the removal of the old legacy waste. He emphasized that this would provide early relief to residents living in the vicinity and lead to a tangible improvement in local environmental conditions.
Looking beyond mere clearance, the Governor issued clear instructions to develop a vision for the site's future. He directed the concerned authorities to transform the dumping ground into a green zone through extensive tree plantation. Furthermore, he instructed officials to accelerate the clearance work to meet this environmental goal.
Inspection of Transport Nagar and Vegetable Market
Later in the day, the Governor's inspection tour extended to other key public areas. He visited Transport Nagar and the Sector 26 vegetable market. At these locations, he advised the accompanying officials to focus on improving several civic aspects.
His recommendations included enhancing traffic management systems, ensuring better security for visitors and vendors, maintaining strict cleanliness protocols, and providing adequate sanitation facilities for the public.
High-Level Official Accompaniment
The review visit saw participation from top administrative and civic officials of the Union Territory. The Governor was accompanied by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, Chief Secretary H. Rajesh Prasad, Home Secretary Mandeep Singh Brar, Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav, Municipal Corporation Chief Amit Kumar, Chief Engineer C.B. Ojha, and other senior officials. Their presence underscored the high priority accorded to resolving the city's waste management and public health challenges.
