IMA Kerala Urges Immediate Ban on Firecrackers After Deadly Thrissur Incident

In the wake of a devastating firecracker accident in Thrissur that resulted in at least 14 fatalities and numerous serious injuries, the Kerala chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a strong demand for a comprehensive or phased prohibition on the use of firecrackers during festivals, religious events, political functions, and other celebrations.

Recurring Public Health Crisis Highlighted

In an official statement, the IMA emphasized that the Thrissur tragedy is not an isolated event but part of a persistent and severe public health concern across India. The association pointed to recent similar incidents, including a firecracker unit explosion in Andhra Pradesh in 2026 that killed 21 people and another in Tamil Nadu where 25 lives were lost. Additionally, the IMA recalled the 2016 Puttingal temple tragedy in Kerala, which claimed over 100 lives and injured more than 350 individuals.

According to the IMA, accidents related to the manufacture and use of firecrackers occur frequently in the country, despite existing safety regulations. The primary issue, as noted, is the lack of strict enforcement of these rules. Unregulated use of firecrackers, especially during festivals and public gatherings, poses a significant threat to human life and overall public safety.

Global Safety Standards vs. Indian Violations

The statement highlighted that many countries worldwide permit fireworks only under controlled conditions. For instance, in Europe and the United States, public displays are conducted under rigorous safety protocols and supervised by licensed professionals, while illegal storage, manufacturing, and uncontrolled public usage are strictly prohibited.

In stark contrast, repeated safety violations at firecracker manufacturing units and festival venues in India continue to lead to tragic loss of lives. The IMA stressed that these incidents are not mere mishaps but preventable disasters, calling for a fundamental shift towards safer modes of celebration that prioritize human life.

Demands for Stringent Measures and Alternatives

To address this ongoing crisis, the IMA has demanded the implementation of stringent national standards for firecracker manufacturing and storage facilities. This includes greater transparency and stricter monitoring of the licensing system. Furthermore, the association advocates for the promotion of eco-friendly and safer alternatives, such as:

  • Laser fireworks
  • Cultural performances
  • Music and dance events

Additionally, the IMA called for strengthening public awareness campaigns to educate the public about the risks associated with firecracker use. By adopting these measures, the association aims to foster a safer environment and prevent future tragedies, urging authorities to take immediate action to protect communities across India.
