Jharkhand Health Minister Orders Hospitals to Stop Withholding Bodies Over Unpaid Bills
In a significant move to uphold human dignity, Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari declared on Monday that hospitals across the state are prohibited from withholding the bodies of deceased patients due to non-payment of medical bills. The announcement was made during the inauguration of an upgraded emergency ward at Bhagwan Mahavir Manipal Hospital in Ranchi.
Government's Commitment to Dignified Healthcare
Ansari emphasized that the state government's top priority is to provide better and dignified healthcare services to the poor, underprivileged, and needy patients. He stated, "Collecting payment from the families of patients after their death is inhumane. In such instances, the medical bills must be waived, and this should be strictly followed by all hospitals." He further added that no one should be deprived of these essential services, reinforcing the government's dedication to accessible healthcare for all.
Background and Enforcement of the Directive
The state health department had initially issued this directive in May last year, ordering all hospitals, including government-run and private facilities, to refrain from withholding bodies over pending bills. This action was taken in response to numerous complaints about certain hospitals refusing to release bodies until families settled outstanding medical dues. The minister's recent statement serves as a strong reminder and reinforcement of this policy, ensuring compliance across the healthcare sector in Jharkhand.
HPV Vaccination Drive Launched in Ranchi
In a related development, the health department launched an HPV vaccination drive in Ranchi district, starting Monday and continuing for the next three months. This initiative targets women aged 14 to 15 years, aiming to prevent cervical cancer in young girls in the future. Ranchi Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar appealed to parents, teachers, and community members to encourage young women to visit their nearest health centers to receive the vaccination, highlighting the importance of proactive health measures.
The combined efforts of banning body withholding and promoting vaccination underscore Jharkhand's broader strategy to enhance public health and ensure ethical medical practices throughout the state.
