KDMC Intensifies Crackdown on Open Garbage Dumping
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has ramped up its efforts to combat the illegal dumping of garbage in open spaces across the twin-city area. Over the past 15 days, authorities have registered cases against more than 100 individuals at various police stations, officials confirmed. The initiative is spearheaded by Ramdas Kokare, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department, who emphasized that the strict enforcement will continue to ensure cleanliness and enhance public health conditions in the city.
Improved Compliance Among Residents
According to Kokare, residents in areas where action has been taken are now adhering to garbage disposal rules. They are handing over waste directly to collection vehicles at designated times, reducing instances of open dumping. However, many people still attempt to dump waste at night to avoid detection. Officials note that open dumping of leftover food, chicken, meat, and fish waste attracts stray dogs, leading to an increase in dog-bite incidents, particularly among children and senior citizens. Additionally, such garbage creates foul odors and unhygienic surroundings, adversely affecting residents' health.
Focus on Garbage-Prone Areas
Most cases have been registered in Kalyan East and other garbage-prone localities. Kokare appealed to residents to inform the civic body if garbage collection vehicles are not arriving regularly in their areas. During the COVID-19 pandemic, KDMC shut down over 300 open dumping spots and removed garbage bins to promote door-to-door waste collection. The civic body now plans to further strengthen its cleanliness drive to maintain a healthier environment.
