Kolkata Gripped by Wave of Recurrent Respiratory Illnesses

A persistent and recurring wave of cough and cold has affected hundreds of residents across Kolkata, with a significant number experiencing a second bout of illness within just one week of recovering. Medical experts point to temperature fluctuations as a primary culprit, suggesting these shifts have increased the viral load in the air, leading to these repeated infections.

Why Are Repeat Viral Attacks Happening?

According to Dr. Soumya Sengupta, Head of Pulmonology at Charnock Hospital, multiple viruses are active during this transitional pre-winter period. He explained a critical reason behind the repeat attacks: "Once a viral infection strikes, the defence mechanism of the lungs—the respiratory cilia—gets stunted and can't protect us from other viruses. It takes about three to four weeks for the cilia to regain effective functioning. During this time, the lungs remain vulnerable to a repeat viral attack."

Dr. Sengupta strongly advises against the immediate use of antibiotics and cough syrups for relief. He emphasized that recovery is quicker if patients use nasal sprays, steam inhalation, and gargling, as these methods address the core issue of airway inflammation, unlike medications that offer only temporary relief.

Echoing this, Dr. Sayan Chakrabarty, an Infectious Diseases Physician at Manipal Hospital, stated that for many, the infection is flaring up after a brief period of subsidence, creating the illusion of a second attack. "Many haven't recovered fully and still have airways inflammation. Due to the residual infection, the symptoms are flaring up due to weakened immunity," he said, predicting this trend will continue until winter properly sets in.

Identifying the Viruses and Vulnerable Groups

Dr. Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri, Chief Microbiologist at Peerless Hospital, identified the usual suspects behind these infections. "We have received multiple cases of recurrent and secondary infections, mostly bacterial. Bacterial streptococcus, haemophilus, and klebsiella have been rampant in the past 10 days. The elderly are mostly getting repeat infections," he revealed.

The impact on healthcare facilities is tangible. The chest clinic at BP Poddar Hospital has witnessed a 20% surge in footfall in the last week, according to Group Advisor Supriyo Chakraborty. Dr. M.S. Purkait, Medical Superintendent at Techno India DAMA Hospital, confirmed that individuals below 12, above 65, and those with weakened immune systems are frequently experiencing recurrent infections.

Prevention is Key to Staying Healthy

Dr. Abhishek Kolay, Consultant Pulmonologist at BP Poddar Hospital, elaborated on the contributing factors. "Sudden temperature shifts weaken the upper airway's natural defence. Also, prolonged indoor stays with poor ventilation, rising pollution levels, and dry winter air contribute to symptoms and increased susceptibility to infections," he stated.

He underscored that prevention plays a crucial role. His recommendations for strengthening immunity include:

  • Maintaining a steady indoor temperature
  • Staying well-hydrated
  • Using saline nasal rinses
  • Consuming a diet rich in antioxidants
  • Ensuring enough sleep
  • Getting the annual influenza vaccination

Dr. Kolay also urged those with repeated symptoms or a persistent cough to seek a timely medical evaluation to manage their condition effectively.
