Madurai Seizes 134.93 kg Banned Tobacco in May

The district food safety department in Madurai has confiscated a total of 134.93 kilograms of banned tobacco products during a series of inspections conducted across the district from May 1 to May 26. This enforcement drive aimed to curb the illegal sale and storage of prohibited items such as pan masala and gutka.

Extensive Inspections Carried Out

Officials conducted thorough checks at 6,341 shops throughout the district. Among these, 3,804 shops were inspected by food safety officers, while 2,537 were examined by joint inspection teams comprising personnel from various departments. The rigorous checks led to the discovery of banned tobacco products at 32 locations.

Action Taken Against Violators

In response to the violations, authorities sealed 28 shops that were found storing or selling illegal tobacco items. Fines totaling Rs 10.25 lakh were imposed on 30 individuals for their involvement in these unlawful activities. Additionally, First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered in nine cases, and further legal proceedings are currently underway.

The district administration has emphasized that continuous monitoring and strict action will persist against the sale, storage, and smuggling of banned tobacco products in Madurai. Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of banned pan masala, gutka, or similar products being sold to the food safety department or the local police.

This crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to enforce tobacco control laws and protect public health. The authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining a tobacco-free environment in the district.
