Mainpuri School Students Hospitalized Following National Deworming Day Incident
In a concerning development from Uttar Pradesh, approximately 20 students from a government school in Mainpuri district were urgently transported to hospital on Tuesday after consuming Albendazole tablets administered as part of the National Deworming Day program. The incident has raised questions about implementation protocols while officials maintain all affected children are now in stable condition.
Immediate Health Response Activated
The medical emergency unfolded at Composite School in Nagla Kirat, where students received the anti-parasitic medication during the nationwide deworming campaign. Shortly after ingesting the tablets, multiple children began reporting symptoms including vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, and heightened anxiety, creating a panic situation within the school premises.
School teachers promptly alerted local health authorities, triggering an emergency response that included deploying multiple ambulances to transport affected students to the district hospital. Senior officials from both health and education departments converged at the medical facility, joined by District Magistrate Anjani Kumar and City SP to personally oversee the situation.
Official Statements and Medical Context
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ramesh Chandra Gupta provided crucial context about the National Deworming Day initiative, explaining that February 10 is designated for this annual public health campaign. "Albendazole tablets are administered twice yearly to eliminate intestinal worms in children," Gupta stated. "The medication is completely safe when taken properly and should be chewed before swallowing for optimal effectiveness."
Gupta elaborated on the chain of events, revealing that initially only two children were brought to hospital with complaints of stomach discomfort. "What followed was largely a panic reaction," he explained. "After seeing these two students receive medical attention, other children and their family members grew concerned and brought additional students to the hospital purely as a precautionary measure. The majority of children are perfectly fine, and those who experienced minor discomfort have already shown improvement. All students will be discharged shortly."
The CMO explicitly denied any negligence in medication administration, emphasizing that such mild reactions can occasionally occur even with properly administered deworming treatments.
District Administration's Assessment
District Magistrate Anjani Kumar provided further reassurance about the students' condition while revealing the scale of the deworming campaign. "We are administering Albendazole to nearly 10 lakh children across Mainpuri district as part of this vital public health initiative," Kumar disclosed.
Addressing the specific incident, Kumar stated: "A small number of children experienced discomfort, primarily driven by panic rather than medication reaction. Only one or two students actually complained of genuine stomach pain. Medical professionals had previously informed us that mild discomfort might occur in isolated cases following deworming treatment."
The district magistrate confirmed that all vital parameters for the hospitalized children remained normal throughout the incident, with no student ever being in serious danger. As an additional precaution, Kumar announced that all medication batches would undergo thorough inspection, including verification of expiration dates.
Political Allegations Surface
Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has leveled serious allegations regarding the incident. ABVP Braj secretary Anand Kathariya claimed that expired medications were distributed to students and criticized what he described as delayed emergency response.
"Such careless endangerment of innocent students' lives will not be tolerated," Kathariya declared, demanding immediate investigation into medication quality and administration procedures. These allegations contrast sharply with official statements maintaining proper protocol was followed throughout the deworming campaign.
The incident highlights the challenges of implementing large-scale public health initiatives while underscoring the importance of clear communication and emergency preparedness in school-based medical programs.
