MLA Ashok Kumar Rai Initiates 'Pain Killer Tyajisi - Kidney Ulisi' Health Awareness Drive

In a significant move to address growing public health concerns, Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai officially launched a comprehensive awareness campaign on Monday. The initiative, bearing the slogan 'Pain Killer Tyajisi - Kidney Ulisi' (avoid pain killers, protect your kidneys), aims to educate the public about the severe risks associated with the excessive and unprescribed use of painkillers, which can lead to irreversible kidney damage.

Awareness Jatha and Rally Draw Community Participation

An awareness jatha was meticulously organized in Puttur town, with MLA Ashok Kumar Rai spearheading the event to highlight the adverse impacts of self-medication. The campaign specifically targets the rampant consumption of over-the-counter painkillers and other tablets without medical consultation. The health awareness rally witnessed active participation from students and members of various like-minded organizations, marching from Darbe to Bolwar to amplify the message.

As part of the outreach efforts, posters containing crucial messages on kidney health were distributed to local medical shops. This strategic move ensures that pharmacies, often the first point of contact for individuals seeking pain relief, become hubs for disseminating vital health information.

MLA's Personal Observations on Rising Kidney Ailments

MLA Ashok Kumar Rai shared alarming insights based on his 13 years of public service, noting a disturbing trend of increasing kidney-related ailments among the youth. "I have observed that many individuals between 25 to 40 years of age are suffering from kidney diseases," he stated. He further explained that numerous patients seeking his assistance revealed a common pattern: they had been regularly consuming painkillers for issues such as dental pain, headaches, or body aches, often purchasing these medications directly from pharmacies without consulting doctors.

"Taking painkillers regularly, especially for extended periods without a prescription, is highly inadvisable and poses significant health risks," emphasized Rai, urging the public to exercise caution.

Expanding the Role of an MLA Beyond Constituency Development

Rai underscored that the responsibilities of an MLA extend far beyond infrastructural and constituency development. "We also have a profound duty to foster awareness on critical public health issues," he asserted. Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he pointed out that the dialysis centre at Puttur Government Hospital alone has 210 registered patients, with the number of individuals requiring dialysis steadily increasing.

"Kidney-related diseases not only affect the patients but also plunge their families into immense distress and financial hardship. Hence, this rally has been organized to proactively combat self-medication and promote kidney health," he added, reinforcing the campaign's community-centric approach.

The initiative reflects a proactive step towards mitigating a silent health crisis, advocating for informed medical practices and preventive care to safeguard kidney function across all age groups.
