Mohali's Stray Dog Menace Reaches Critical Levels

Public safety in Mohali is under serious threat from a growing stray dog population. The city has witnessed a dramatic 33% increase in dog bite cases over just three years. This alarming trend highlights unchecked canine numbers and mounting civic challenges.

Hospital Data Reveals Soaring Numbers

Civil Hospital in Mohali provides concrete evidence of the crisis. Reported dog bite cases jumped from 16,516 in 2023 to 21,793 in 2025. Stray dogs accounted for 20,312 of these incidents, while pet dogs were responsible for 1,481 bites.

The hospital also documented other animal bites during 2025. These included 216 cat bites, 112 rat bites, and 32 monkey bites.

Supreme Court Takes Notice

The escalating stray dog problem has caught the attention of India's highest court. During a recent hearing, Supreme Court justices addressed the rising population and associated dangers.

"One cannot predict when a dog may bite," the bench remarked, emphasizing the urgent need for preventive measures. The court also highlighted increasing road accidents caused by stray animals.

Official Response and Medical Facilities

Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal assured residents about medical readiness. "We ensure immediate medical attention and vaccination for all cases reported in government hospitals," she stated. Mittal confirmed compensation provisions, noting that 16 claims had been filed with all eligible cases settled.

Population Estimates Show Rapid Growth

While no official stray dog census exists, officials estimate the current population between 15,000 and 20,000. Reports from late 2025 suggest numbers have nearly doubled since 2023.

  • 2023 estimate: 9,000-10,000 stray dogs
  • Mid-2025 estimate: 18,000-20,000 stray dogs

Sterilization Efforts Falling Short

The Municipal Corporation continues sterilization drives, but progress remains slow. In 2025, workers sterilized 1,276 stray dogs:

  1. 765 female dogs
  2. 511 male dogs

This averages about three sterilizations daily. Between 2023 and 2025, the total reached 6,971 dogs. Officials openly admit these efforts cannot keep pace with the rapid population increase.

A Pressing Civic Challenge

With daily dog bite reports and rising resident complaints, Mohali's stray dog situation demands urgent action. The unchecked canine population represents one of the city's most critical civic challenges. Stronger and sustained intervention is now essential for public safety.
