Odisha Health Department to Review Summer Heatstroke Preparedness in Key Meeting
The Health and Family Welfare Department of Odisha is set to convene a crucial meeting on March 11 with Chief District Medical and Public Health Officers (CDMPHOs) to comprehensively review summer preparedness, with a primary focus on preventing and managing heatstroke. This proactive initiative comes as the state braces for the peak summer months, aiming to mitigate health risks associated with rising temperatures.
Government Hospitals to Establish Dedicated Heatstroke Wards
In preparation for the impending heatwave, government hospitals across Odisha are actively preparing to open dedicated sunstroke wards or earmark specific beds for patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. This measure is part of a broader strategy to ensure timely and effective medical care for those affected by extreme heat conditions.
The department has issued a public advisory urging residents to exercise caution, particularly when stepping outdoors after 11 am during the peak summer period. Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Director of Public Health, emphasized the state's readiness, stating, "We are prepared for the summer. If the temperature rises abnormally, we will take necessary steps accordingly. In the meeting, we will discuss with the CDMPHOs to stay alert for any untoward situation in the health sector during the summer."
Standard Operating Procedures and District-Level Actions
Official letters have been dispatched to CDMPHOs and government hospital authorities, directing them to adhere strictly to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the prevention and management of heat-related illnesses as temperatures escalate. District authorities have been instructed to develop and implement preventive and curative measures aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality linked to heat stress disorders.
These disorders include, but are not limited to:
- Heatstroke
- Heat exhaustion
- Heat syncope
- Heat cramps
- Heat rash
Officials are mandated to report on the stock position of essential medicines and the number of beds allocated for heat stress patients in state-run hospitals, ensuring strict compliance with the established SOPs.
Awareness Campaigns and Surveillance Measures
As per the SOP, extensive awareness campaigns will be conducted at both district and sub-divisional levels to enhance public understanding of heat-related illnesses and the necessary preventive steps. District surveillance units have been tasked with obtaining heatwave forecasts from the district emergency cell located in the collectorate, enabling timely preventive and management interventions.
Additionally, the department has mandated that waiting areas in all healthcare institutions be equipped with adequate fans, drinking water, and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) distribution facilities to provide immediate relief to patients and visitors.
Inter-Departmental Coordination and Control Room Setup
The health department has stressed the importance of robust inter-departmental coordination at district and sub-divisional levels, coupled with a systematic approach for sensitization and information sharing. A dedicated control room will remain operational round-the-clock to monitor the situation and coordinate response efforts effectively, as outlined in the official communication.
This comprehensive framework underscores Odisha's commitment to safeguarding public health during the challenging summer season, leveraging structured protocols and collaborative efforts to address the threats posed by heatwaves and related health emergencies.
