One Dead, Three Hospitalized in Suspected Illicit Liquor Incident in Bihar

A tragic incident has unfolded in the Balganga village under the Raghunathpur police station area of East Champaran district, Bihar, resulting in one fatality and three individuals fighting for their lives in a local hospital. The victims are believed to have consumed illicit liquor or spirit, though authorities are awaiting confirmation from postmortem reports.

Police Response and Ongoing Investigation

Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat has stated that the exact cause of death remains unclear and will only be confirmed after the postmortem report is available. However, he emphasized that the police are actively conducting raids to apprehend liquor smugglers in the region. In a significant development, six individuals identified as liquor mafias, who had recently been released from jail, were arrested by police on Thursday.

To oversee the investigation, sub-divisional magistrate and sub-divisional police officers have been deployed to camp in the area. This move underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case, given the recurring nature of such incidents in the locality.

Historical Context of Illicit Liquor in the Region

Turkauliya has gained notoriety as a hotspot for liquor mafia activities over the past five years. The area has witnessed multiple fatalities linked to illicit liquor consumption. In the last three years alone, more than seven persons have died after consuming illicit liquor in the Turkauliya, Harsidhi, Sugauli, and Raghunathpur police station areas. This pattern highlights a persistent public health and law enforcement challenge in East Champaran district.

The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of measures to curb the smuggling and distribution of illegal alcohol, which continues to pose a threat to community safety. As investigations proceed, residents and officials alike are calling for stricter actions to prevent future tragedies.
