Pune Woman Seriously Injured in Early Morning Stray Dog Attack
A 43-year-old woman, employed at a private firm in the Chakan industrial area, sustained severe injuries after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Medankarwadi early on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 6 a.m., as the victim, identified as Malu Shinde, was standing alone on a deserted stretch while waiting for her bus to work.
Details of the Attack and Immediate Response
According to her son, Rutvik Shinde, who also works in the MIDC area, Malu missed her regular bus that morning and was waiting at the usual stop when several dogs suddenly approached and attacked her. The dogs bit her on both legs, hands, and head before anyone could intervene. A gram panchayat staffer nearby rushed to her aid, and local residents helped chase the dogs away.
Rutvik was called to the scene, and they immediately took his mother to Chakan Rural Hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries and significant blood loss, doctors referred her to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in Pimpri for advanced treatment. Her condition has since stabilized, and she has been discharged from the hospital.
Medical Assessment and Previous Incidents
Dr. Sachin Kamble, the medical superintendent at Chakan Rural Hospital, stated that Malu had multiple deep wounds and was in a state of shock upon admission. Immediate medical intervention was crucial, and after providing basic treatment, she was transferred to YCMH for further care.
This attack follows a tragic incident on March 16, where a 32-year-old woman was attacked by stray dogs near the Pune-Nashik highway in Chakan around 2 a.m. and later succumbed to her injuries. Residents have expressed frustration over repeated such events, citing administrative negligence and a lack of structured policies to control the stray dog population.
Rising Concerns and Community Outrage
Dr. Kamble added that in recent months, the hospital has handled five to six daily dog bite cases from across Khed tehsil. Authorities have been written to, urging necessary measures, but residents report little visible action.
The latest attack has sparked outrage among Medankarwadi and surrounding area residents, who highlight that aggressive stray dog packs pose a significant threat, especially during early morning and late evening hours. One resident emphasized the risk to vulnerable groups, saying, "It is risky, especially for children and elderly people. Despite repeated complaints, no concrete action has been taken."
Demands for Immediate Action
Citizens are calling for urgent measures, including:
- Sterilization and vaccination drives for stray dogs
- Stopping illegal relocation of dogs from other territories
- Improved street lighting in vulnerable areas
- Increased patrolling to enhance safety
Officials from the Chakan Municipal Council and local gram panchayats have acknowledged these concerns and stated that steps are being planned. However, residents like Kiran Kad point out that past assurances have not led to tangible results. "The action authorities claim to have taken is not visible on ground. They must step up these efforts," Kad said, adding that this incident underscores the urgent need for a coordinated and effective response to manage the stray dog population effectively.
