The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government's flagship health scheme, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, has emerged as a crucial lifeline for thousands of residents as seasonal fever cases surge across the state. The scheme provides cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year, covering over 1.7 crore families in Punjab.
Rising Seasonal Fever Cases
With the onset of the monsoon season, Punjab has witnessed a sharp increase in cases of dengue, malaria, and viral fevers. Hospitals in major cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Jalandhar are reporting a significant uptick in patients seeking treatment. The state health department has issued advisories urging people to take preventive measures, including using mosquito nets and eliminating stagnant water.
How the Scheme Works
Under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, beneficiaries can avail cashless treatment at empanelled government and private hospitals. The scheme covers a wide range of medical procedures, including hospitalization, surgeries, and diagnostic tests. To avail the benefits, patients need to present their health card at the hospital's help desk, after which the treatment is provided without any upfront payment.
The Punjab government has empanelled over 1,000 hospitals under the scheme, ensuring that even residents in rural areas have access to quality healthcare. The scheme is particularly beneficial for low-income families who may otherwise struggle to afford medical expenses.
Government's Response
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has emphasized the importance of the scheme in reducing the financial burden on families. "Our goal is to ensure that no family in Punjab is deprived of medical treatment due to lack of funds. The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana is a step towards achieving universal health coverage," he said in a recent statement.
Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh has directed all district health officers to ensure the smooth implementation of the scheme and to raise awareness among the public about its benefits. Special camps are being organized in rural areas to issue health cards to eligible families.
Impact on Patients
Many beneficiaries have praised the scheme for its timely intervention. A resident of Patiala, who recently recovered from dengue, shared, "I was admitted to a private hospital for five days. The entire treatment cost of Rs 1.2 lakh was covered under the scheme. I didn't have to pay a single rupee." Such testimonials highlight the scheme's effectiveness in providing financial protection to vulnerable families.
Medical experts have also lauded the initiative, noting that it encourages early treatment-seeking behavior. "When people know they can get cashless treatment, they are more likely to visit a doctor at the onset of symptoms, which can prevent complications," said Dr. Rajesh Kumar, a public health expert.
Challenges and Way Forward
Despite its success, the scheme faces challenges such as limited awareness in remote areas and the need for more empanelled hospitals in underserved regions. The government is working to address these issues through outreach programs and by incentivizing private hospitals to join the network.
As Punjab battles the seasonal fever outbreak, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana stands out as a beacon of hope, ensuring that health emergencies do not lead to financial distress for families across the state.
