Rabid Dog Attack in Dharwad Leaves Nine Injured, Including Young Child
A horrifying incident unfolded in Dharwad on Wednesday evening when a rabid dog went on a rampage, attacking nine individuals and leaving them with serious injuries. Among the victims was a five-year-old boy, highlighting the grave danger posed by the uncontrolled stray animal in the area.
Details of the Attack and Injuries
The attack occurred at Shiradi Layout, located near the University of Agricultural Sciences. The rabid dog inflicted bite wounds on multiple parts of the victims' bodies, including their hands, ears, stomach, legs, neck, shoulder, and back. This widespread pattern of injuries indicates the ferocity and unpredictability of the animal's assault.
Four of the injured are currently undergoing treatment at the district civil hospital. They have been identified as:
- Sheetal Kabadi
- Gangavva Uppar
- Laxmi Madar
- Five-year-old Rishik
The remaining victims are also receiving medical care and are being kept under close observation by healthcare professionals. Doctors have confirmed that all patients are being treated according to standard medical protocols for such incidents.
Community Response and Authorities' Inaction
Panic quickly spread throughout Shiradi Layout as the rabid dog continued to roam the locality, attacking residents indiscriminately. In a desperate attempt to protect their community, enraged locals chased the dog and ultimately killed it by pelting stones.
Residents have expressed strong criticism toward the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and the local gram panchayat, accusing them of failing to address the growing stray dog menace despite repeated complaints. Ramappa, a local resident, revealed that a formal complaint was filed with the HDMC a fortnight ago after stray dogs began attacking people, but no action was taken.
"The Shiradi Layout falls on the periphery of HDMC limits. Neither the civic body nor the gram panchayat has responded to our problems," Ramappa stated, highlighting the administrative neglect faced by the community.
Another resident, Savitri, emphasized how the fear of stray dogs has severely impacted daily life, particularly for vulnerable groups. "Fear of stray dogs has forced people—especially children and senior citizens—to stay indoors. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the authorities have shown no concern," she lamented.
Ongoing Medical Care and Observations
Medical authorities have assured that all injured individuals are receiving appropriate treatment and are under vigilant medical supervision. The protocol for rabies exposure and wound management is being strictly followed to prevent any complications.
This incident has reignited concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of municipal responses to stray animal threats in urban and semi-urban areas of Karnataka.
