Bengaluru Healthcare Firm and Logistics Startup Pioneer Drone-Based Diagnostic Sample Delivery
In an innovative move to circumvent Bengaluru's notorious traffic congestion, a city-based healthcare giant and a logistics startup have joined forces to deploy drones for transporting diagnostic samples. This collaboration aims to ensure faster and more reliable supply chains for critical medical materials.
Pilot Project Details and Impressive Results
Narayana Health, a leading healthcare provider, partnered with logistics startup Airbound in a pilot project that has been operational since January 2026. The initiative involved using specialized drone flights to move diagnostic samples from a clinic in Chandapura to Narayana Health City in Bommasandra.
Over the course of 54 days, approximately 700 flights were conducted, with each drone capable of carrying up to 40 diagnostic samples per journey. The aerial route covered a distance of 4 kilometers, which the drone completed in just 10 minutes. This stands in stark contrast to the typical road commute, which can take about an hour during peak traffic conditions.
Cost Efficiency and Technological Innovation
Beyond the significant time savings, the drone flights demonstrated remarkable cost efficiency. Each flight incurred operational expenses of about Re 1, making it a more economical option compared to traditional road transport methods.
The drones utilized in this project feature a blended wing-body tailsitter design. This innovative configuration combines vertical takeoff capabilities with the aerodynamic efficiency of fixed-wing flight, enabling lower cost per kilometer of delivery when compared to conventional ground transportation.
Prior to this pilot, diagnostic samples were transported via three to four daily road trips, which were subject to delays and uncertainties due to traffic conditions.
Leadership Perspectives and Future Plans
Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, founder and chairman of Narayana Health, expressed enthusiasm about the project's success and outlined plans for expansion. "We intend to scale up this model at our upcoming hospital in Banashankari, which is set to be inaugurated in the coming months," Dr. Shetty stated.
While the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granted approval for the test flights, formal authorization for operating services from Banashankari to Bommasandra is still pending.
Naman Pushp, founder and CEO of Airbound, reported that the pilot project achieved a perfect safety record with zero failures. "Conventional logistics is primed for change. Our ambition is to build a new layer of infrastructure for commercial freight," Pushp emphasized, highlighting the transformative potential of drone technology in logistics.
Broader Implications for Healthcare Infrastructure
Dr. Shetty also provided insights into the broader vision for Narayana Health's new facility in Banashankari. "This will be the first hospital in India to go completely paperless and smart. Only those directly involved in patient care will be on-site, while all other services will be handled remotely," he explained, indicating a comprehensive approach to modernizing healthcare delivery through technology integration.
