The state-of-the-art ambulance was officially flagged off on Tuesday by the Delhi Forest Department in collaboration with the wildlife conservation organization, Wildlife SOS. The vehicle represents a significant upgrade in the city's capacity to handle emergencies involving its largest land mammals. It is equipped to respond swiftly to situations where elephants are injured, sick, or found in locations where they face imminent danger.
The ambulance is a custom-built Mahindra Bolero, specially modified to carry essential veterinary equipment and a medical team to the scene of an emergency. This initiative fills a critical gap in urban wildlife management, ensuring that expert care can reach an elephant in need without delay, which can often be the difference between life and death.
Advanced Medical Capabilities On Wheels
The vehicle is not just a transport unit but a mobile veterinary clinic. It comes stocked with a comprehensive array of medical tools and supplies necessary for field treatment. Key features include an anesthesia injection kit, a vital tool for safely sedating a stressed or injured animal during treatment. The ambulance also carries a portable X-ray machine, allowing for immediate diagnosis of fractures or internal injuries on-site.
Other essential equipment includes a darting system for remote drug delivery, surgical kits for minor procedures, and a range of medicines and first-aid supplies.
