Noida Medical Institute Launches Comprehensive Obesity Awareness Campaign

The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida has initiated a significant public health campaign titled 'Obesity Week,' running from March 9 to March 14. This timely initiative coincides with World Obesity Day and is spearheaded by the institute's department of medicine to address the growing concerns surrounding obesity and its associated complications.

Free Diagnostic Services for Early Detection

As part of this awareness drive, GIMS is offering complimentary FibroScan tests to obese patients. This non-invasive procedure is crucial for detecting fatty liver disease and other liver-related complications at their initial stages, allowing for timely intervention. Additionally, the institute will provide free DEXA scans to postmenopausal women aged 45 and above who are suspected of having osteoporosis, a condition often linked to metabolic changes associated with obesity.

Rising Public Health Concern

Brigadier Dr. Rakesh Gupta, Director of GIMS, emphasized the alarming increase in obesity cases and related lifestyle diseases in recent years. "Obesity has emerged as a major public health concern," stated Dr. Gupta. "Sedentary lifestyles, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy dietary habits are primary contributors to this escalating trend." He highlighted that such campaigns are essential to encourage early screenings and promote healthier lifestyle choices to prevent severe complications like diabetes and cardiovascular issues.

Comprehensive Medical Consultations Available

During the Obesity Week campaign, patients have the opportunity to consult with specialists across multiple departments, including:

  • Medicine
  • Gynaecology and Obstetrics
  • Orthopaedics

These consultations are available at the institute's outpatient departments, providing a holistic approach to managing obesity-related health risks.

Understanding Fatty Liver Disease

Medical professionals at GIMS explained that fatty liver disease is often termed a 'silent' condition because many individuals do not exhibit noticeable symptoms during its early phases. When symptoms do manifest, they may include:

  1. Persistent fatigue and general weakness
  2. Mild pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen
  3. Unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite
  4. Nausea and a sensation of fullness

In advanced stages, complications such as ascites—fluid accumulation in the abdomen—can occur, leading to visible swelling and increased discomfort. Early detection through screenings like FibroScan is vital to prevent progression to these severe outcomes.

The Obesity Week campaign at GIMS underscores the institute's commitment to proactive healthcare, aiming to mitigate the long-term impacts of obesity through education, early diagnosis, and accessible medical services.
