The Truth About Cholesterol and a Powerful Natural Solution

When most people hear the word cholesterol, they immediately think of something harmful. However, cholesterol is actually a necessary component produced by our liver that plays vital roles in cell formation, hormone production, and digestion. The problem arises when we consume extra cholesterol from foods like fried items, processed meats, and high-fat dairy products.

When 'bad' LDL cholesterol levels become too high, it can stick to artery walls and form plaques, narrowing blood vessels and increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Meanwhile, 'good' HDL cholesterol helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream, protecting your heart.

The Science Behind Plant-Based Solutions for Cholesterol

Research supports the effectiveness of plant-based approaches to cholesterol management. A study by the American College of Cardiology found that adopting a vegetarian or vegan diet can lead to an average decrease of 0.34 mmol/L in total cholesterol and 0.3 mmol/L in LDL cholesterol compared to omnivorous diets.

Additionally, the Journal of the American Heart Association highlighted that plant-based diets can reduce LDL cholesterol by approximately 10% and apolipoprotein B by 14%, suggesting substantial benefits for heart health.

Kulith Prasam: The Traditional Cholesterol-Fighting Drink

Dr. Hansa Yogendra of The Yoga Institute has highlighted a special traditional drink called Kulith Prasam that can naturally help manage cholesterol levels. The main ingredient, horse gram (known as Kulith, Kulthi, Karthi or Sgra), is abundant in iron and calcium and provides one-fourth of the total protein required in a day.

This drink is particularly effective in reducing LDL and VLDL cholesterol levels and even possesses anti-diabetic properties. It also protects the liver and gallbladder and is recommended for urinary calculi, helping remove stones from the body.

How to Prepare Kulith Prasam at Home

Here's the simple recipe shared by Dr. Yogendra:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of cooked horse gram
  • 1 spoon lemon juice
  • 2 tsp garlic paste
  • 1 chopped tomato
  • 2 tsp paste of pepper and cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 5-6 curry leaves
  • 5 ml of cooking oil
  • Salt to taste

Method:

Clean, wash and soak horse gram for 4 hours. Steam it and let it cool, then remove excess water. Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and curry leaves, and allow them to splutter. Add chopped tomatoes and sauté well, then add 2 teaspoons of garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.

Add lemon juice, salt, and water, and bring to a boil. Now add the horse gram to the mixture. Allow it to boil, mash it well, then remove from heat. Let it cool slightly, strain the juice, and serve hot.

Additional Steps for Cholesterol Management

Beyond incorporating Kulith Prasam into your routine, Dr. Yogendra recommends focusing on a healthy diet rich in protein and fiber. Include fresh fruits, vegetables, healthy grains, and nuts that have been soaked overnight.

Remember that factors like genetics, high blood pressure, smoking, and diabetes also influence cholesterol levels, so a comprehensive approach to health is essential. Always consult with your healthcare practitioner before starting any new health routine.
