In an era dominated by modern diet trends, many traditional nutritional powerhouses often fade into obscurity. One such forgotten gem is horsegram, known in Tamil as Kollu. This humble legume, packed with exceptional health benefits, is now being championed by spiritual leader and wellness advocate Sadhguru, who explains its unique properties and the correct way to consume it.
The Protein Power of Traditional Horsegram
In a detailed YouTube video, Sadhguru sheds light on the remarkable nutritional profile of horsegram. He highlights that Kollu is one of the most protein-rich lentils available. The legume's modern English name, 'horsegram,' has a straightforward origin. Sadhguru explains that racehorses are fed this gram for strength and stamina, which is how it earned its common name.
How to Sprout Horsegram for Better Digestion
Sadhguru emphasizes that while horsegram is highly nutritious, it can be difficult to digest in its regular form. The solution, he suggests, is sprouting. The process of sprouting Kollu transforms it, making the nutrients more bioavailable and easing digestion. He outlines a simple, traditional method to sprout horsegram at home:
- Place the horsegram in a bowl of water.
- Soak the legumes for approximately six to eight hours.
- Drain the water, tie the soaked grams in a clean cloth, and keep it sealed.
- After about three days, the Kollu will sprout, with shoots reaching around half an inch in length.
The sprouted horsegram can be consumed raw. However, Sadhguru notes that it requires thorough chewing, which can further aid the digestive process.
Managing the Heating Effect of Kollu
A key aspect Sadhguru addresses is the inherent 'heat' (Ushna) property of horsegram. Consuming it, especially in large quantities, can generate excessive internal heat in the body. He describes specific bodily signals that indicate this effect, such as a sensation of heat in the eyeballs or a frequent urge to urinate.
To balance this heat and calm the system, Sadhguru recommends three effective practices:
- Consume sprouted green gram (moong dal).
- Drink juice made from ash gourd.
- Apply a small amount of castor oil on the navel, forehead, or behind the ears.
He states that these methods can help mitigate the heating effect almost instantly. Sadhguru concludes by advocating for mindful eating, stating, "Eating with care and watching what the body needs will enable the body in many ways. It's a conscious management." His insights bring a holistic perspective to incorporating this ancient, protein-packed superfood into a contemporary diet.
