Sadhguru, the renowned spiritual leader, has sparked a debate by calling eggs 'the worst thing you can consume on a daily basis.' In a recent Instagram reel, he advised against daily egg consumption and instead promoted three traditional South Indian vegetarian dishes that are rich in protein and vitamin B12.
What Did Sadhguru Say?
In the video, Sadhguru stated, 'Egg is the worst thing you can consume on a daily basis. At this time, after this equinox, which will happen in a few days, there is a tendency for certain type of people, particularly women, they will feel kind of lethargy, lack of energy. If you don't reverse it with the right kind of food consumption, you tend to get into that dip.' He further added that many homes prepare foods high in B12, but people today opt for bread and eggs for breakfast instead.
Vegetarian Examples Shared by Sadhguru
Explaining further, he said, 'Everybody is talking about, what about my protein? Well, the most muscular animals are herbivores, isn't it? How come? The greatest sportsmen today are all vegetarian.' He cited examples like Novak Djokovic, Virat Kohli, Lionel Messi, and Tom Brady, emphasizing that they have both muscle and brains. He then recommended three dishes from South India: Lakshmi Charu from Andhra Pradesh, Palaisadam (Pazhaya Sadam) from Tamil Nadu, and Koolu (Koozh) from Karnataka, all of which are high in B12.
Importance of Protein and Vitamin B12
Protein is essential for growth, repair, and maintenance of the body, as well as for producing enzymes, hormones, and antibodies that support immune function. Vitamin B12 is crucial for nerve cell health, brain function, memory, and concentration. Deficiency can lead to anemia, dizziness, numbness, mood changes, and memory problems.
Lakshmi Charu
This traditional South Indian rasam, popular in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, is made from rice starch water, tamarind, spices, curry leaves, and sometimes leftover dal. It creatively uses leftover rice water, minimizing food waste, and is best served with hot steamed rice.
Pazhaya Sadam
Also known as 'old rice,' this dish is made by soaking leftover cooked rice overnight in water. Common in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, it is a cooling, nutritious breakfast, especially in summer. Natural fermentation increases probiotics, benefiting gut health. It is often served with curd, buttermilk, onions, green chillies, pickle, or fish curry.
Koozh
This South Indian porridge-like dish, made from fermented millet flour (ragi, bajra, or kambu) mixed with water or buttermilk, is filling, cooling, and rich in protein. Popular during summer, it helps keep the body hydrated and is commonly served with raw onions, green chillies, pickle, or curry.
Sadhguru's message encourages a shift towards traditional, plant-based foods that are nutrient-dense and environmentally sustainable, challenging the modern reliance on eggs and processed foods.
