Sleep Deprivation Crisis in Youth Linked to Mental Health Issues, Say Kolkata Experts

In Kolkata, a growing concern has emerged as reduced hours of sleep are leading to several conditions and issues related to mental health, particularly among teenagers and young adults. Experts in the city have highlighted that the effects can range from aggression and bullying to streaks of violence, underscoring a critical public health challenge.

Primary Causes of Sleep Deprivation

Exposure to digital devices for extended periods is identified as a primary reason behind the lack of sleep. Additionally, a dearth in physical activities and unhealthy nutritional habits are significant contributing factors. Sourav Das, a specialist at Somnos Sleep Clinic in Kolkata and secretary of the Calcutta Sleep Society (CSS), emphasized, "Sleep deprivation has increased among young adults and adolescents. Prolonged hours of being glued to the screen is one of the primary factors."

Recommended Sleep Durations and Trends

Experts recommend eight to ten hours of sleep for pre-teens and adolescents. However, research indicates that the average sleep duration has reduced by two to three hours over the last decade. This decline is alarming, as inadequate sleep leads to noticeable changes in behavior, including increased irritability and risk of violent tendencies.

Additional Factors and Health Implications

Somnath Maity, a myofunctional and sleep specialist at the Institute of Sleep Science in Kolkata (DipSleep), pointed out that deformities in posture, a sedentary lifestyle, and consumption of unhealthy food items also cause sleep disorders in children. Pallab Chatterjee, a paediatric pulmonologist at Apollo Hospital and Institute of Sleep Science, advised, "Parents should be encouraged to prioritise healthy sleeping habits in children. They must help kids in taking up physical activities."

Sleep disorders can have compounding effects on overall health. Uttam Agarwal, a sleep surgeon and president of CSS, stated, "Quality sleep is must for ensuring overall wellbeing of health. In order to improve public health, sleep related issues must be diagnosed early. Awareness about the need to maintain proper and healthy sleep habits must be spread."

Awareness Initiatives Ahead of World Sleep Day

Various organizations across the country have begun taking up several awareness initiatives focusing on the need for sufficient sleep, particularly in light of World Sleep Day, which falls on March 13. These efforts aim to educate the public, especially youth and parents, about the critical importance of sleep for mental and physical health.

The initiatives include campaigns to reduce screen time, promote physical activities, and encourage better nutritional habits. By addressing these factors, experts hope to mitigate the rising trend of sleep deprivation and its associated risks, fostering a healthier future for the younger generation.
