Massive Buddhist Gathering Kicks Off in Gaya with Peace Prayers

More than ten thousand Buddhist monks, nuns, and devotees gathered in Gaya on Monday. They participated in the world peace prayer on the opening day of the 37th Nyingma Monlam Chenmo. This ten-day event is organized by the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

Historic Venue Hosts Sacred Ceremony

The prayers took place at the UNESCO World Heritage Mahabodhi Mahavihara. This sacred site holds immense significance for Buddhists worldwide. Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment here and became the Buddha centuries ago.

The ceremony will continue for ten days with daily activities. These include prayers, teachings, ritual offerings, and meditation sessions. Thousands of pilgrims and visitors are expected to attend. They seek spiritual blessings at this holy location.

Spiritual Leaders Lead the Event

The event is being led by high-ranking Rinpoches and Tulkus. Notable leaders include Tulku Sangngak Rinpoche and Gonpo Tulku Rinpoche. Khandelwal Kunsang Chodon and Lama Sonam are also participating. Other eminent spiritual leaders are guiding the ceremonies.

Organizers issued a press note explaining the tradition's roots. The Nyingma tradition traces its spiritual lineage directly to Guru Padmasambhava. He introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century.

Colorful Decorations and Traditional Welcome

The Mahavihara premises have been decorated with colorful flowers. This creates a vibrant and serene atmosphere for the participants.

Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee member secretary Mahashweta Maharathi welcomed the spiritual leaders. He presented them with traditional sacred ceremonial scarves. This gesture honored the leaders and marked the beginning of the event.

Sacred Rituals Mark the Commencement

The spiritual leaders then offered sacred bowls before the statue of Buddha. This took place in the sanctum sanctorum. Monks chanted sutras during the offering. These rituals officially commenced the 37th Nyingma Monlam Chenmo on Monday morning.

The event draws global attention to Gaya's spiritual heritage. It reinforces the city's role as a central hub for Buddhist pilgrimage and peace initiatives.
