Home is our abode, a place to reset, recharge, and rejuvenate, regardless of its size. It is where the mind finds peace, and we cherish time with family. While we often measure a good home by its vastness—number of rooms, square footage, or hall capacity—comfort has never obeyed a tape measure. A house can be spacious yet hollow, or small yet the warmest place one knows.
The Charm of Small Spaces
Some of the happiest homes are in the most impractical locations: old, oddly shaped, nestled in crowded neighborhoods, and passed down through generations. One such home belongs to Jagdish Sailor in Gujarat's Surat. Despite its tiny dimensions, it radiates warmth.
A Street of Narrow Homes
In Surat's Rander area, over 80 ancestral houses boast unique, seemingly unlivable dimensions. This street is primarily home to the local fishing community, families who have stayed for generations rather than moving to larger, distant homes. Rander sits on the bank of the Tapti (Tapi) River, offering soothing terrace views.
Meet Jagdish Sailor's Home
Among these houses, Jagdish Sailor's home is exceptionally narrow. According to a BBC Global Women Instagram video, the home is so narrow that stretching both arms allows touching both walls simultaneously. Its width is just 1.2 meters, while its length runs to roughly 25 meters. Despite the tightness, it is a complete home. The Sailor family says it includes a seating area, kitchen, and office-cum-bedroom on the first floor, with the roof opening to a river view. Four generations have lived here, a testament to its value beyond size.
Why Stay So Long?
The obvious question is comfort. The family firmly insists the home is comfortable and peaceful, preferring its river proximity over roomier alternatives. They have adapted to live happily: only five can eat at once, yet the house has hosted many festivals and even weddings. According to them, the narrowness has never hindered celebrations; it has only made them more intimate and cherished.
Lifestyle Insights
This story reminds us that home is not about square footage but about love, adaptability, and connection to place. The Sailor family's contentment challenges conventional notions of ideal housing.
