The inauguration was graced by two of the city's most beloved icons, legendary singer Usha Uthup and acclaimed actor Madhabi Mukherjee, setting a memorable tone for the festival's latest edition.
A Ceremonial and Soulful Beginning
The event's formal start saw the traditional lighting of the lamp. This ceremony was performed by Usha Uthup, Madhabi Mukherjee, Festival Director Anjum Katyal, Oxford Bookstore CEO Swagat Sengupta, Festival Programming Head Neeta Sreedharan, and Alipore Museum Director Jayanta Sengupta. Usha Uthup, affectionately known as Usha Di, immediately captivated the gathering by performing a deeply moving Shiv Vandana, infusing the atmosphere with a devotional spirit.
Launch of 'Madhabi’s Garden' and a Nostalgic Conversation
A significant highlight of the opening session was the AKLF launch of 'Madhabi’s Garden'. This book is the English translation of Madhabi Mukherjee's autobiography, Madhabikanon, translated by Arunava Sinha. Following the launch, a compelling conversation unfolded, moderated by Oindrilla Dutt and featuring Usha Uthup, Madhabi Mukherjee, and Arunava Sinha.
Madhabi Mukherjee shared fascinating anecdotes from her illustrious career. She reminisced about her formative years and the experience of working with stalwarts like Shishir Bhaduri, Chhabi Biswas, Kanan Devi, Satyajit Ray, and Ritwik Ghatak. She even recalled humorous memories of trying to avoid Ritwik Ghatak on the film set. Translator Arunava Sinha discussed the process of bringing her life story to an English readership and the profound cultural impact she has made on audiences globally.
A Confluence of Arts and a Lively Finale
Usha Uthup reflected on the shared essence of storytelling in both literature and music. She emphasized the role of AKLF as a vital cultural confluence for the city. The session concluded on an energetic and joyous note. Usha Uthup took to the stage once more, performing a lively medley of 'Shaan' and 'Ramba Ho'. Her performance thoroughly captivated the audience, perfectly setting the festive and celebratory mood for the 2026 edition of the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival.
