Bengaluru's Historic Cauvery Arts Emporium Begins Relocation from MG Road Landmark
In a significant development for Bengaluru's cultural and commercial landscape, the iconic Cauvery Arts and Crafts Emporium is set to relocate from its historic showroom on MG Road. This prominent establishment, which has been a fixture at the bustling junction of MG Road and Brigade Road for over 60 years, is preparing for a gradual shift to a new location.
Gradual Transition Plan Announced by KSHDC
HR Rajappa, the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Handicrafts' Development Corporation (KSHDC), has confirmed that the relocation process will be phased. "The shift will be gradual, and both the old and new showrooms will function simultaneously for some time before the old one is shut," Rajappa stated in an interview. This approach aims to ensure minimal disruption to customers and operations during the transition period.
Moving to a Corporation-Owned Property on MG Road
The emporium will be moving to another building also situated on MG Road, marking a strategic shift from a rented space to a corporation-owned property. "The old showroom is in a rented building. We will be moving to our own property," Rajappa explained. To keep the public informed about the change, the KSHDC has already installed an LED display board in front of the new building, signaling the upcoming move.
Renovation and Setup Costs for the New Premises
According to Rajappa, work on the new building commenced around 2018, involving extensive renovation and expansion of the existing structure. The renovation and setup of the showroom were carried out at an approximate cost of Rs 6 crore. The KSHDC office has already been relocated to the new building, occupying the third floor and part of the second floor. The remaining space in the building will be dedicated to the showroom, with the basement specifically allocated for larger items such as furniture.
Uncertainty Surrounds the Fate of the Heritage Building
While the relocation is underway, there remains uncertainty regarding the future of the heritage building that has housed the emporium for decades. Emporium staff have indicated that the owner is currently out of the country, and it is unclear whether the historic structure will be demolished or repurposed. This adds a layer of nostalgia and concern for Bengaluru residents who have long associated the emporium with its iconic MG Road location.
The move represents a new chapter for the Cauvery Arts and Crafts Emporium, as it transitions to a modern, owned facility while maintaining its presence on one of Bengaluru's most famous streets. The gradual shift ensures that patrons can continue to access traditional handicrafts during the transition, preserving the emporium's legacy in the city's cultural fabric.
