Bodh Gaya Temple Committee Launches Major Crackdown on Fraudulent Monks
The Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) has initiated a comprehensive process to identify and eliminate fake monks who have been plaguing the sacred site of Bodh Gaya, bringing disrepute to the Mahabodhi Temple and cheating gullible pilgrims. This move aims to restore the sanctity of the seat of Buddha's enlightenment, which has been marred by the activities of fraudsters masquerading in monastic robes.
Proposed Security Measures and Verification Systems
In a detailed two-page letter to the president of the International Buddhist Council (IBC), BTMC secretary Mahashweta Maharathi has outlined several corrective measures. The proposal includes joint patrolling by police, IBC representatives, and shrine officials to actively identify and drive out imposters from the temple premises. Additionally, the BTMC favors restricting entry of robed individuals and suggests issuing bar-coded identity cards to genuine monks after thorough background checks and vetting by competent authorities.
Only monks carrying these verified bar-coded ID cards would be permitted inside the shrine, ensuring that unauthorized individuals cannot exploit the religious setting. The committee also plans to establish a help desk for real-time verification of credentials of robed men moving around the temple, providing immediate assistance to visitors and officials alike.
Awareness Campaigns and Historical Context of the Issue
The proposed measures extend beyond physical security to include an awareness campaign to educate visitors about the fake monk menace. This initiative will involve distributing multilingual information materials and installing signages advising pilgrims not to hand over offerings to unauthorized monks. Interestingly, this spiritual cleansing effort coincides with the ongoing hydraulic cleaning of the shrine exterior, symbolizing a holistic approach to purification.
Over the years, the shrine has frequently made headlines for negative reasons due to groups of robed men involved in fist fights within the premises and alleged misappropriation of devotional offerings. A notable past incident involved a criminal case against a former chief priest for illegally felling a branch of the sacred Bodhi tree and selling its parts at exorbitant prices, often in foreign currency.
Background Checks and Database Creation for Monk Verification
The issue of monk verification gained urgency following a recent incident where a monk was found flying a drone in a prohibited area around the shrine, which has been targeted by terrorists twice in the past. BTMC secretary Mahashweta Maharathi acknowledged that currently, there is no mechanism to conduct background checks or verify credentials of robed individuals in Bodh Gaya.
She has sought cooperation from the IBC to identify genuine monks and create a comprehensive database, ensuring that only authenticated spiritual practitioners can operate within the temple grounds. This collaborative effort aims to protect both the integrity of Buddhist practices and the safety of millions of pilgrims who visit this UNESCO World Heritage site annually.
