Shillong Celebrates Christmas with Midnight Masses, Carols & Illuminations
Christmas Celebrations Light Up Meghalaya's Shillong

The Christian-majority state of Meghalaya, particularly its capital Shillong, was immersed in a profound yet joyous celebration marking the birth of Jesus Christ. The festive spirit, heralding the 'Prince of Peace', reached its peak with solemn midnight services in churches across the state, where hymns filled the air with reverence and happiness.

Churches, Carols, and Communal Celebrations

The celebrations began on Christmas Eve and continued into the day. A unique and vibrant sight across Shillong's streets was the procession of carol groups from various churches. Led by individuals dressed as Santa Claus and 'fairies', these groups moved through the city, singing hymns and spreading the 'good message' of Christ's advent. Thousands of faithful participated in special prayer sessions and the traditional midnight masses held in numerous churches.

Adding to the spiritual atmosphere, a special prayer session was also organized at the Ramakrishna Mission in Shillong to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, showcasing the inclusive spirit of the festivities.

Shillong Transforms into a Festive Wonderland

Shillong, aptly called the Pine City where Christmas trees are a natural part of the landscape, was spectacularly decorated for the season. Both government and private buildings, along with major street corners, were illuminated and adorned with Christmas trees, banners, and festoons. The city's commercial hubs witnessed a frenzy of last-minute shopping and night-long concerts on Christmas Eve.

Areas like Police Bazar (Khyndailad), Iewduh (Barabazar), and the localities of Laitumkhrah, Laban, Polo, and Rynjah were crowded with people purchasing clothes, foodstuff, and other festive items. Bakeries across the city saw long queues of people eager to buy cakes in various flavours, a Christmas essential.

The entertainment was led by individual artistes and gospel bands, who enthralled crowds with timeless Christmas classics such as 'Jingle Bells', 'Oh Holy Night', and 'Santa Claus Is Coming to Town'.

Festive Spirit Spreads Across the State

The celebration was not confined to the capital. The Garo Hills region, renowned for its attractive illumination displays during the Christmas and New Year period, was also buzzing with festive activities and joy.

State leaders joined in extending the season's greetings. Governor CH Vijayashankar and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma conveyed their Christmas wishes to the people of Meghalaya, adding an official note of goodwill to the widespread celebrations.

The collective observances across Meghalaya highlighted a community united in faith and festivity, turning the entire state into a glowing testament to the Christmas spirit of peace, joy, and togetherness.
