Udupi Paryaya Festival Faces Controversy Over Muslim Group's Participation
Controversy erupts over Muslim group's role in Udupi Paryaya

Udupi's Paryaya Festival Marred by Conflicting Claims

A significant controversy has emerged in Udupi, Karnataka, just days before the grand Shiroor Mutt Paryaya Mahotsav. The dispute centers on conflicting statements regarding the participation of the Udupi Zilla Muslim Sauharda Paryaya Samithi in the traditional 'hore kanike' procession scheduled for January 13.

Samithi's Announcement and Claims of Tradition

On Saturday, the Udupi Zilla Muslim Sauharda Paryaya Samithi publicly declared its intention to take part in the festival's 'hore kanike' procession. The committee's president, Haji Abubakar Parkala, addressed reporters, emphasizing Udupi's long-standing history of Hindu-Muslim harmony.

Parkala stated that as part of this tradition, the samithi had previously organized blood donation camps during the Pejavara Mutt Paryaya. He announced plans for the committee to serve welcome drinks to thousands of devotees during the 'pura pravesha' of Vedavardhana Thirtha Swami on January 9.

Furthermore, Parkala claimed the samithi would distribute 10,000 free water bottles to devotees on the main day of the Paryaya Mahotsav, January 18. He also mentioned that members of the Christian community had expressed willingness to join the 'hore kanike' procession.

Organizers' Firm Denial and Accusations

In a sharp rebuttal, the Shiroor Paryaya Reception Committee stated that no permission had been granted for the Muslim samithi's participation. Udupi MLA and committee president Yashpal Suvarna clarified the official position.

Suvarna asserted that the samithi had not shared any details with the Paryaya Mahotsav Hore Kanike Committee, nor had the mutt itself sought such support. He made it clear that decisions related to 'hore kanike' rest solely with the official committee.

Reacting to the samithi's press conference, Suvarna suggested that the announcements regarding 'hore kanike', water distribution, and the use of duff instruments were attempts to create confusion and could potentially hurt Hindu religious sentiments.

Planned Procession and Community Participation

According to the samithi's plans, community members intended to bring groceries and vegetables for mass feeding at the Bhojana Shaala of Sri Krishna Mutt during the procession. The 'hore kanike' procession is scheduled to begin from Jodu Katte at 3 pm and proceed to the Sri Krishna Mutt premises.

This controversy unfolds against the backdrop of Udupi's renowned religious festivals, which are major events drawing devotees from across the region. The Paryaya festival, a biennial celebration where the responsibility of worshipping the deity Sri Krishna rotates among eight mutts, is a cornerstone of the region's cultural and spiritual life.

The conflicting narratives have created an atmosphere of uncertainty ahead of the festival, highlighting the delicate balance between interfaith harmony and the autonomy of religious institutions in organizing their rituals.
