Kashi Vishwanath Temple Deploys Cooling Fountain for Shivling Amid Scorching Varanasi Heat
In response to the blistering heatwave gripping Varanasi, the revered Kashi Vishwanath temple has implemented a unique and traditional cooling measure: a delicate fountain now crowns the Shivling, showering it with a continuous stream of cool water. This ritual, initiated on Akshaya Tritiya, will persist until Shrawan Purnima, offering symbolic relief during the intense summer months.
Comprehensive Heat-Relief Measures for Devotees
With temperatures soaring to approximately 44 degrees Celsius, the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust and administration have rolled out extensive arrangements to safeguard pilgrims. German hangars fitted with mist fans have been strategically installed across the shrine campus, while jute mats line the pathways to protect devotees' feet from the heated granite flooring. These efforts aim to provide much-needed respite from the oppressive heat.
Traditional and Mythological Significance
According to temple CEO Vishwa Bhushan Mishra, the installation of the 'Kunwara' or shower above the idol of Lord Vishwanath aligns with longstanding customs. Senior priest Shrkanth Mishra elaborated on the mythological roots, explaining that Lord Shiv, after consuming poison during Samudramanthan to save the world, retained it in his throat, earning the name Neelkanth. This act generated intense bodily heat, and the annual water offering is believed to neutralize this effect, providing coolness until Rakshabandhan.
Enhanced Rituals and Devotee AmenitiesDuring all key aartis—including Mangala Aarti, Bhog Aarti, Saptarishi Aarti, and Shringar Aarti—the deity receives additional water streams through the fountain. Beyond spiritual practices, the temple has prioritized practical support:
- Canopies and German hangars equipped with mist fans and commercial coolers at multiple points.
- Chilled RO drinking water stations accessible throughout the campus.
- Volunteers stationed at temporary counters to supply water to queuing devotees.
- Stockpiles of ORS, glucose, and jaggery, alongside first-aid services at an Arogya Kendra.
These proactive steps were implemented well in advance, anticipating the temperature surge that has exceeded 44°C. The administration's focus remains on ensuring a safe and comfortable experience for all visitors during this challenging period.
